What we like

  • A distinctive, polished look with little prompt effort
  • Personalization learns your taste, and the Edit Model handles image references and local edits
  • Parameters such as aspect ratio, stylize and chaos give real control

Watch out for

  • Subscription only, so you pay before you can judge it fully
  • Parameters take time to learn
  • Less literal than some tools when a prompt is very detailed

Midjourney is an AI image generator known for a polished, artistic look. You describe an image in words and it returns a set of four to choose from, which you can vary, upscale and edit.

What is current

Testing now: on its alpha site, Midjourney is testing a Thinking Mode that reruns a V8.2 image after finding where it missed your prompt. See our summary.

V8.2 became the default model on July 24, 2026, with a focus on aesthetics, image quality and personalization. On August 27, Midjourney added an Edit Model that edits images with instructions, uses up to four image references (replacing Omni Reference) and supports inpainting and outpainting. See the latest-model details and the model tracker.

How it works

You create on midjourney.com: type your prompt in the Imagine bar at the top of the Create page, press Enter and Midjourney generates a set of four images. Midjourney’s own advice is that short, simple prompts usually give the best images. Add parameters at the end, such as --ar for aspect ratio, --p to apply your personalization profile, or --draft for fast, cheap drafts.

Plans

Midjourney’s docs list four plans: Basic, Standard, Pro and Mega. Relax mode (unlimited slower generation) is for Standard and above. The docs say there is no free trial on the website or in Discord. Check the plans page for current prices.

Who should use it

If you want striking images quickly and are happy to learn a few parameters, Midjourney is a strong first choice. If you need an image that follows a long, literal brief or must contain exact text, compare it with GPT Image and Ideogram.
