On October 6, 2026, Mistral AI opened a public preview of Mistral Large 4, which it nicknames “le Chonk”. It is the company’s largest model so far: 1 trillion parameters in total, with 49 billion active at a time, and natively multimodal.
What to know
- You can try the preview through the API in Mistral Studio today.
- Mistral says it will release the model weights by the end of October.
- Until then, the company says it is red-teaming the model with cybersecurity leaders, vetted partners and state authorities, who get the same model with reduced moderation and expanded cyber capabilities.
- Mistral says the model is competitive with the strongest open-source models and state of the art among open models for enterprise work such as cybersecurity, finance and law. These are the company’s own claims.
Why it matters
Large open-weight models give teams the option to run powerful AI on their own infrastructure. Whether Large 4 delivers on that depends on the weights actually shipping and on independent testing.
